GCOM 361 – Class 2 – Blog Assignment

Beverly McGhee, Graphic Designer

From 1979-1989, I worked in several print shops, where I did typesetting, graphic design, pre-press stripping, plate burning, and paste-up and layout. I have been working as a free-lance graphic designer since 1989 to the present time.

In 2005, I accepted a position as a Graphic Designer in a large home remodeling company. About six months after being hired, I was approached by my immediate supervisor, the VP of Marketing, about whether I would be able to learn Dreamweaver and be able to add and maintain the company web site. Our company was not able to provide the content needed to finish and launch the site. I considered myself to be very computer savvy, considering I had never taken a computer class in my life, but yet I was able to successfully teach myself how to run both the MAC and WINDOWS platforms. The company had purchased CS (the first generation), but it did not come with Dreamweaver at that time. I told her that I was confident that I could at least learn the software enough to add content to the new templates. When CS3 came out, the company upgrades to CS3. Oh boy, I did not know what I was getting myself into! I now know enough about Dreamweaver to get myself into trouble, but I did maintain the website for more than 5 years.

In September 2010, I was laid off, due to the economic downturn. I had been looking for graphic design positions, then administrative assistant positions or secretarial positions – anything to generate a steady income. During my job search I noticed that most graphic design positions required a bachelors degree and preferred web design experience also. Well this was a problem because I do not have a degree and I needed to learn web design from the ground up. I am hoping that your class with help to accomplish my goal of being able to plan and design web sites. So, I decided to go back to school and get my Graphics Communication Degree, so I will be qualified for competitive market that I will be returning to.

This is probably Too Much Information (TMI), but that is my story…Back in School after 50!
